About Welney Wetland Centre (RSPB Reserve)

Welney Wetland Centre, managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), is situated on the banks of the River Great Ouse in Cambridgeshire, England. The reserve covers a blend of managed wet meadows, reed beds, ditches, and open water areas that serve as critical habitats for numerous waterfowl species, especially in winter months. Established as a conservation site to protect wetland habitats, it is most famous for hosting large flocks of Bewick’s swans migrating from Siberia each year between November and March. Alongside swans, the site supports a variety of other birds including wigeons, teal, lapwings, and marsh harriers. The reserve’s geography, located in the Fens, features flat lowland wetland landscapes maintained through careful water level management to provide ideal conditions for resident and migrating species. Visitors enjoy wildlife-watching from a network of hides and promenades that offer close views of birds, amphibians, and mammals such as otters and water voles. Welney is also popular for bird photography due to the abundance of wildlife and the tranquil environment. Educational programs, guided walks, and seasonal events make it a welcoming destination for families, birders, and nature enthusiasts. The reserve contributes significantly to wetland conservation and offers a peaceful outdoor experience close to local communities. Regular bird surveys and habitat restoration work augment its role as a vital site for biodiversity in the region.
